Dreaming your Dán with the Otherworld
A creative immersion for women - to claim your Dán, your ‘soul’s gift’
Boyne Valley, Ireland,
September 29th -October 3rd
Aoife & Jen invite you to gather in sacred co-creation with the Otherworld, the sacred landscape of Éiriu, our unconscious - that of the dream, vision, tomb and womb.
We will gather for 4 nights and 5 days in the ancient mythological landscape of the Tuatha De Danann, in the heart of the Boyne Valley located just minutes from the temple of Sid in Bru (Newgrange).

DREAMING YOUR DáN
In the Irish language the word ‘‘Dán’’ translates to poem; gift; an art; destiny; fate.
In essence, your Dán is your souls gifts, the destiny you have come here to travel, the gifts that you carry and are here to be shared with the world.
Your Dán and your soul are one. To live our Dán is to dance to the beat of our own drum, to know ourselves, to cultivate and share our gifts for our benefit and that of the greater good.
To claim our Dán is an act of service, to ourselves and our communities.
In ancient times, at Teamhair na Ri/Hill of Tara - upon approaching the gate to enter, you would be asked by the gate-keeper ‘‘what is your gift/art?’’ We were known for our skillset, and we walked with it, in service to our communities.
The Irish lineage is a creative one which dates back thousands of years. Irish culture is so creative in nature, we are the land of poets, musicians, and artists. The great temples of Brú na Bóinne display some of the most impressive artwork worldwide, - with Knowth containing 1/3 of the total of megalithic art in Europe! Our retreat will take place in the heart of this sacred landscape, and we will be in dialogue with the ancient sites & creative ancestors of this place.
‘‘What is the myth you are living?’’
This question—asked to himself—changed the course of Swiss Psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s life. Jung did not mean myth as fabrication, what ‘modern’ society would have us believe as something our primitive ancestors made up, rather he meant what story is ALIVE within us that is bursting to be lived. He says:
‘I took it upon myself to get to know “my” myth, and I regarded this as the task of tasks.
C.G. Jung, The Red Book, Liber Novus
Myth isn’t about the past, it’s about the present. Our ancestors believed that each of us is born into this world carrying a Dán (“dawn”), a soul’s gift, a rare magical gem seeded inside of us that we gift to our community in our own unique way. In Western mysticism, the Greeks called the art of bringing our Dán into being, poiesis, the forebear of the word, poetry, meaning ‘to make’, ‘to bring forth’ our soul’s gift.
The ancient Irish structured their tuatha, their tribes around this belief with the Áes Dána, the ‘People of the Arts’, the poet-seers leading society along with the King in sacred union with the Sovereignty Goddess. This is symbolic of the union of feminine and masculine principles within us to live out our soul’s gift.
Our ancestors warned that although this seed dwells within us all, not everyone will answer their soul’s call. Many creative lives remain unlived.
‘For the origin of poetry and knowledge is in everyone physically, but in every second one it does not shine forth. In another it does.’
The Cauldron of Poesy 8th-century Irish text about our Dán
Your Dán Myth Cycle
This intimate retreat is an invitation to live and immerse yourself in your Dán by cycling through your own myth cycle. A myth cycle is a collection of myths that speaks to a greater cosmology, to the essence of what it means for your soul to be alive at this time. Through the meeting of our Dáns (Aoife and Jen), we have developed this map to guide you into yours:
Our Retreat day-by-day
Our sacred pilgrimage
Brú na Bóinne is without a doubt one of Ireland’s most renowned complex of ancient temples - and the more greater known is that of Sídh an Bróga, (Newgrange) which aligns with the Winter Solstice sunrise. It is said that here is home to the Dagda, and Boann, two extremely important maternal & paternal deities of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
Síd in Bróga of the Boyne Valley - is the womb-like quartz covered ancient sun-temple, aligned with the midwinter Solstice sunrise, a site which is at the forefront as a symbol of Irish heritage, dated to be older than the pyramids of Giza. By modern-dating systems Newgrange is said to be around 5,200 years old - built around 3,200 B.C. What we do know for sure, is it is very old indeed.
This quartz mound is remineisent of the womb, and is linked with Birth - the light of the solstice sun penetrates the dark womb like chamber, marking the resurrection of the solar year.
Knowth & Dowth are the two satellite mounds which exist within the Bru na Boinne complex. Knowth (Cnoc Bui) is said to be home to Bui, a lesser known Sovereignty Goddess. Newgrange represents birth, Dowth is death, and Knowth is marriage. This is reflected in the famous triskele, carved into the chamber of Sid in Broga. Knowth is home to 1/3 in total of all of Europes megalithic artwork. It is astoundingly beautiful, powerful and breathtaking.
We will be journeying to both of these sites on the second day of our retreat, as we connect with the energy of the Goddess Boann, her story and essence as she guides us in spiraling into the centre of our ‘‘Dán’’.
hill of tara pilgrimage
The Hill of Tara / Teamhair na Rí translates to the ‘‘Sanctuary of the King’’. In ancient times this was the seat of the High King of Ireland. It was here that the King married Medbh the sovereignty goddess, in the ancient rites of the Banais Ríghí. In ancient Ireland the King was not just representative of power and law, he reflected the wellbeing of the land. He embodied the culture and people. When he married the land through the sovereignty goddess, the masculine and feminine became one and balance was created.
Tara is a place of spiritual and political significance in Ireland. I believe it holds the ‘‘akashic records’’ of this lands ancient memory and it offers a space & gateway of remembrance and reclamation, when approached and interacted with in consciousness and reverence. Tara is a place of homecoming, of ancient & ancestral activation. The leylines throughout Tara offer an opportunity to amplify prayer, healing and ceremony.
There are 7 sacred holy wells on Tara, aswell as many other powerful energy points throughout the larger complex of the site. It in essence is a holy temple. The mound at Tara is in alignment with Imbolg and Samhain sunrise.
Tara is the place where I (Aoife) remembered my Dán and I have the sense that it has the power to help us activate & access our soul. Tara is the place where we will have our Dán inauguration ceremony.
When we live our Dán, we move through the world from a place of belonging, trust and connection with our soul.
We live rooted in our blood and soul ancestry, weaving with our souls gifts, we feed our souls calling & our Dán becomes enlivened.
Meet your guides….
AOIFE LOWDEN
Aoife Lowden is a Bean Draoi na hÉireann, devoted to remembering the ancient healing ways of Ireland.
In her essence a creative - Aoife is a storyteller, musician, and artist who has a passion for creating from the inspiration she receives from the landscape and magic of Irish culture.
She works intimately with the land, ancestors, elements, plants & trees to co-create spaces of healing & remembrance. Aoife's greatest learning received has come from the land itself, by the fireside, in the heart of the forest. Here she lived for some years, and this experience cracked open her ability to converse & commune with the Plants and Trees. It is from this place that she teaches, and shares her embodied wisdom which comes directly from her relationship with the land, soul of Éiriu and ancient ones.
Aoife offers regular fire and native plant ceremonies, sacred site ritual, online courses, retreats and ancestral celebrations. Her creation of Leigheas Dé Danann is a culmination of all of her offerings which are rooted in remembering with the Tuatha Dé Danann, and are often offered in collaboration with her wider community.
Aoife’s Dán: Aoife is here as a voice for the more-than-human world, to bring healing to the land & soul of Éire, to support the ancestral awakening and restoration of the Irish land-based wisdom traditions.
JEN MURPHY
Jennifer Murphy is a Celtic mythologist, anthropologist, and creative dreamer from Dublin. Her apprenticeship to following her soul’s breadcrumbs over the past twenty years has guided her work and formal studies in Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies, Anthropology and Development, Creativity and Innovation, and Jungian Psychology and Art Therapy.
Jen supports creatives from diverse fields to (re)connect with the mythopoetic imagination of Éire (Ireland). Using ancient wisdom to inform modern creativity through myth, dreamwork, imagination, and the body, her work to date has emphasised a reclamation of the Irish mythic feminine.
Jen’s Dán:
Jen’s Dán is to support people to live into their own Dán by co-creating with the Celtic Otherworld. In essence, to thread their soul into the soul of Ireland.
Praise for Jen’s work….
“Jen’s diverse life experiences, academic and research grounding, along with her experience as an embodiment coach gives her work an authenticity, depth, breadth and flexibility that is rare. As a visual artist with decades of experience, my immersion in working with Jen was life-enhancing and empowering. It opened portals to clarity, commitment and a renewed passion for my vocation as an artist. I was able to explore the question of leadership as an artist in the contemporary world with provocative curiosity. This course held space as I challenged so many of the murky, patriarchal and destructive paradigms rampant in the "art world". Developing an awareness of the crucial importance of embodiment practice woven into studio art practice is a gift of grounding for my work as an artist. It carries a sense of sovereignty that can not be fragmented, dismissed or compromised. This, for me, was the insight to the power of intuitive courage.”
Irene, USA/Turtle Island
“Deciding to work with Jen was one of the best choices I ever made. I’m not saying that lightly. In the past two years of our work together, I have revolutionised my relationship to myself and to the divine… To say that I was reborn through the portal of this work is insufficient. I am being reborn every day, every moment if I desire. I see life now in cycles, in spirals. Since embracing this process of continual change, my life has become infinitely more easeful. Living my life from this place of deep trust has resulted in me magnetising the success that was always available to me. My life continues to unfold in the most beautiful and mysterious of ways.”
-Kelly Jeanne, USA/Turtle Island
Praise for Aoife’s work…
”Aoife Dé Dannan is a fíor bean feasa na h-Éireann. She holds the wisdom of many grandmothers in her young being. An elder before her time, she embodies the strength of an Dúir naofa (sacred oak) and the gentleness of an Fia bán (white deer). Authenticity shines through her being. Aoife is the guide our time now urgently needs. She is leading the remembering, retrieving, and recovering of the healing energies of Mother Earth, of the lost wisdom practices of our ancestors – their deep knowing of the sacred plant medicines, their natural connection to an talamh naofa and to the Otherworld, their sacred celebration of the seasons and high holy days, and the especial importance of holding ceremonial fires in the sacred places of Éire.”
-Aodhammair/Ireland
‘‘A most powerful experience to be at this retreat, the room we had for spontaneity, the beautiful food, the many stories shared, the music and dance, the water we drank, the land we were on, the people it summoned, the berries and herbs, the experiential learning of making medicine, of being embraced by Liath Lus in so many ways, the fire, the dreams, the listening, the sharing of dreams and sounds, the vulnerability, the movement each morning, the releasing and realizations every moment provided. The space to feel a part of nature, the camaraderie and care. With Love and gratitude, would do this again and again.’’
